Fox 2 Detroit meteorologist Alan Longstreet stars in new indie film premiering this week
Alan Longstreet spends most of his time talking about high temperatures and low pressure fronts as a meteorologist for Fox 2 Detroit’s morning newscasts.
But this week, you can watch him navigate the highs and lows of a lonely janitor named Aaron who’s about to have his life jolted by the arrival of his sibling in the made-in-Detroit movie “Kid Brother.”
It’s the first leading role on the big screen for the local TV weather man, who’s been mixing forecasting with films for several years now.
“Kid Brother” will premiere Wednesday night with a cast meet-and-greet and screenings at the Phoenix Theatres State Wayne. The event will benefit Champions of Wayne, a program that offers Wayne Memorial High students both mentoring and financial incentives to reach academic goals.
The movie will open at the Phoenix Theatres Laurel Park in Livonia on Friday. And there will be another charity event at Phoenix Theatres Mall of Monroe on Sept. 26.
Made by Dearborn brothers Bryce and Devin Cameron and filmed in and around Detroit in September 2016, “Kid Brother” is about the fractured family ties of Aaron, who’s mired in sullen, unresolved emotions, and his little brother, Jared (Peter Herold), who shows up wanting to reunite with their estranged dad.
The story explores how relationships are necessary, if not always easy, and introduces a chance for romance between Aaron and a woman he meets by chance (Tonya Hawkins).
For Longstreet, 31, who was born in Grand Rapids and grew up in Coopersville, acting has been something that’s captivated him since elementary school, which was when he first saw the Disney musical “Newsies.”
“Me and my friend loved that movie and would always make fools of ourselves and pretend to dance, reenacting scenes on the playgrounds and getting made fun of,” he says with a laugh.
A graduate of Central Michigan University, Longstreet gravitated toward another interest, science, for his full-time job.
“When it came time to choose a career, I went practical,” he says of studying meteorology. He’s been with Fox 2 Detroit for five years, where he works the A.M. shift and is a familiar face on the morning show “The Nine.”
He’s also something of an exercise expert for the station. “(When) I’m not working the green screen, you can find me working it in Studio C as my bosses parade me around in tight T’s for a weekly fitness segment, ‘Get Fit,'” reads his bio, tongue firmly in cheek.
Longstreet began pursuing film acting about four years ago, back when Michigan’s film incentives still existed. He had a brief but grabby role in the acclaimed indie “Buzzard,” a dark comedy and festival hit directed by Joel Potrykus of Grand Rapids.
