Amy Stiller Biography

Amy Stiller is an American actress, stand-up comedian and a writer. She was born on August 9, 1961, in New York, New York. She is the daughter of comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, and the older sister of actor Ben Stiller.

Growing up in the cultural richness of New York City in the 70’s she was lucky enough to be exposed to theatre, art, music, writers, actors and artists of all kinds from the time she was born. It was a magical existence watching her parents work in famous films, TV shows like Ed Sullivan early on – among many others and Broadway plays.

One of her best childhood memories was that of being with her parents in summer stock when they were doing Prisoner Of Second Avenue by Neil Simon with her and her brother imitating their middle aged characters, in costume with every laugh, pause and line perfectly memorized. When she was just 8 she got to play the flower girl in her mom’s movie Lover’s And Other Strangers and sing with Cloris Leachman.

Amy’s first real role was as The Nurse in Romeo And Juliet in a high school production by director Alfred Uhry. When she got a standing ovation and laughs she was hooked. After that came Vanities and a slew of others. In the 1980’s Amy graduated from Circle In The Square’s two year professional theater program. She studied with Sondra Lee, Kathryn Gately, and Fred Karemen.

Amy Stiller Talent Recognition

In 1995 or so after taking a sketch writing class at Chicago City Limits taught by Justin Stangel and John Webber Amy began developing character pieces and shortly after that she started doing standup. This led to her performing characters with the sketch group ’ Urban Side Effects’ in 1997. The NY Post said: “Stiller aims for something a bit deeper, more intense and realistic in her self-contained spots; Stiller convincingly becomes her characters, whether she’s portraying a shallow motivational speaker, a self-absorbed Beverly Hills matron sharing her loss at at not being able to buy a certain article of clothing she wanted or an anxious, insecure Jane Fonda creating a video for actors to audition”.

After all the recognition, she got a manager and interest from the Aspen Comedy Festival and more roles in theater television and film. She continues to do comedy and act, having received praise in the Nantucket Inquirer Mirror for the one person play Fully Committed in which she portrayed 40 characters:  “Amy Stiller does nothing but prove herself a powerful force. Her hilarious takes on each and every character shows her affection for the life ‘Sam’ leads. Stiller has the talent and gusto to pull it off with a bravura that harkens back to the day of Wendy O. Williams, Stiller gives her all ….”

And in The Bloomington Independent for her performance in The Vagina Monologues: “Stiller anchored the production with poignancy and drama. She handled comedic moments well but her real strength was in the bitter sweet humor of unfulfilled lives “ Her humor, combined with an innate vulnerability and intelligence makes her a unique kind of serio-comic actress. Her ability to simultaneously be subtle and authentic and also do hilarious characters makes her a force to be reckoned with.

Also a writer, her pieces are published in the anthologies ‘Dirty Laundry’, edited by Maggie Rowe and Anderson Gabrych and ‘No Kidding’, coming out in May 2013, edited by Henriette Mantel. She performs her standup and her autobiographical pieces in New York and Los Angeles.

Amy Stiller King Of Queens

Gloria, is a recurring character who appears in three episode of The King of Queens, in the episodes “Fresh Brood” and “Four Play” in Season 8 and “Mild Bunch” in Season 9. The part of Gloria is played in the episodes by Amy Stiller, who also appears in the episode “S’Ain’t Valentine’s” (Season 1, episode #16, 1999) as Allison Finnegan, daughter of Mary Finnegan, who was played by her real life mother Anne Meara.

About Gloria’s encounters with Arthur

In “Four Play” Gloria, who was a waitress as the Java Hut restaurant/cafe, encounters Arthur, who overhears her talk about a boyfriend she was thinking of approaching to rekindle their relationship; when she heeds his advice and gets back together with him, she approaches him again, but this time, Arthur, after listening to the fry cook Hugo, gives her the exact opposite advice she asked for in asking for a raise, which caused her to be fired.

Later in “Mild Bunch”, she again encounters him at the nearby video store where she now works, and remembers him as “the old man that got (me) fired”, as she says that it took 3 months to find work and she had to go on welfare, as Arthur callously says “Well, you’ve made quite the comeback!” as he looks for the videotape of In Her Shoes.

When he returns to the video store later that evening, as Gloria was closing up, he pleads with her to allow him to select the In Her Shoes video, as she is taken in by his song and dance about not having been there for his daughter, and that it would be nice to be able to sit down and watch the In her shoes video with her. When she acquieses and allows him to select the video, the alarm which she forgot about, goes off as a nearby beat cop arrives as she laments “The alarm…and the morning crew has the code — I’m so fired!” as Arthur callously leaves saying “Be sure and let me know where you wind up!”
