Ashlee Strong Clinton

It is an odd moment in politics. The presidential election will see Clinton up against Donald Trump, a candidate who, through a history of sexist comments, has turned off even the women in his own party. (Seeing
an opportunity, Clinton has elevated women’s issues to draw a contrast with Trump, and made direct overtures to the Republican women who refuse to embrace her opponent.)

It is also an era marked by paralysis, with Washington remaining a source of frustration for Americans who are fed up with the dysfunction. And women, even if sympathetic to gender-wide obstacles, are no less likely to take each other to task. (Carly Fiorina, the former presidential contender and only woman in the 2016 Republican field, was mostly celebrated within her party for her unabashed attacks on Clinton.)

Yet politicos across the spectrum acknowledge that women are breaking through, even as public approval ratings of Congress are at such historic lows that candidates toss around the word “Washington” as a slur to define their adversaries as woefully out of touch.

AshLee Strong is typical of this new breed of a female political operator. Aged 31, she is the press secretary for house speaker Paul Ryan, the highest-ranking Republican in the country, who in  2012 was the party’s vice-presidential nominee and has been a chief author of an annual budget detailing conservative priorities. Strong, who lives on Capitol Hill within walking distance of her office in the House of Representatives, is constantly inundated with requests from reporters in need of official comment, staff communications, and breaking news alerts. She has lived in Washington for nearly a decade and got her first taste of life in the political sphere as an intern in the Senate, where she would later go on to serve as an aide to John
Thune, the number three Republican there. “Capitol Hill is an entrepreneurial place where hard work and hustle are rewarded,” she says. “If you’re smart, work hard and have a bit of luck, you can rise quickly.” Her day typically begins as early as 6am, often in exactly the same way it came to a close the night before: sifting through her crowded inbox.

Most of Strong’s networking has occurred within the halls of Congress with other staffers and political reporters. As part of a younger generation of Washington women, Strong says she has been fortunate not to encounter overt sexism or a gender pay gap. It’s a far cry from life on Capitol Hill in 1962 when Life magazine ran a feature titled “How nice to be a pretty girl and work in Washington”.

Ashlee Strong Fox News

Look at this tweet from Paul Ryan‘s national press secretary AshLee Strong about her boss’s pet project. See how the replies far outweigh the retweets and favorites? That friends, is the Ratio.

Strong’s ratio is not good.

She set off a Twitter firestorm today when she insisted that the American Health Care Act was posted online and received a Congressional Budget Office score. When the AHCA passed in the House a few days ago, two chief complaints from Democrats and voters were that it had been shrouded in secrecy and hadn’t received a CBO score. Obviously, the AHCA only got through the House the other day after not making it through in March. The reasoning behind that is precisely why people are annoyed with Strong for claiming that there were total transparency and a CBO score to go along with the vote this week. Let Twitter user/MSNBC host Chris Hayes explain.
