Apart photography, Oliver had minor roles in television and film.  He starred as Bastian in the 1984 movie The NeverEnding Story. Subsequently, Oliver was cast as the lead in Tim Burton’s short film Frankenweenie and as the android “Daryl” in D.A.R.Y.L. a 1985 film, a part for which he was the winner of a Saturn Award.

His last played role in a feature film was Willie Saravian in Paul Bartel’s in 1989 ensemble comedy Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. Later on Oliver became a printer, photographer and specialized in nineteenth century processes such as collodion and Woodburytype. Oliver’s work has been displayed in gallery exhibitions, museums and used in films. His book A History of the Woodburytype was published by Carl Mautz Publishing in the year 2007.
