Catherine Asaro Biography

Catherine Asaro, born Catherine Ann Asaro, is an American author of science fiction and fantasy writings. Her most notable books are about the Ruby Dynasty called the Saga of the Skolian Empire.

She is also a former ballet and jazz dancer performing with various dance companies and musicals. She even founded two dance groups at Harvard: The Mainly Jazz Dance Company and the Harvard University Ballet.

She is the daughter to Frank Asaro, a nuclear chemist who discovered the iridium anomaly leading to the theory that the collision of an asteroid with the Earth caused the mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs.

She is married to John Kendall Cannizzo, an astrophysicist at NASA. Together, they have one daughter, a ballet dancer.

Catherine Asaro Career

She graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Chemical physics from Harvard. She began writing after her graduation. When not writing, she would be attending conventions and signings or teaching math, physics or chemistry. She is the director of the Chesapeake teams for national tournaments and has led her students to top levels in a number of national competitions. She is also a member of SIGMA. In addition to all this, she advocates for gender equality and has been invited as a speaker and/or visiting professor for various institutions. She has completed two terms as the President of the Science Fiction and Writers of America from 2003 to 2005.

Catherine Asaro is well known as a hard science fiction writer. The depth of science fiction differs from book to book. She is also noted as one of the very few female science fiction writers to have a doctorate in hard science. She also adds complex mathematical concepts in her writing. She collaborated with the rock musicians  Point Valid and created The Diamond Star Project’s Diamond Star,  a soundtrack for a book she wrote titled Diamond Star. the lyrics to the song are found in the book and were the inspiration that led to the project producing a CD. In 2010, Starflight Music released the EP Goodbye Note by Catherine Asaro and Donald Wolcott, a member of Point Valid.
