Charlie Depew Interview
Q: Fans who have read the books know Jake as the quintessential ‘nice guy.’ Is that the takeaway you also want audiences to have from the series? Or does he have any secrets?
Charlie DePew: I do think that he is your quintessential ‘nice guy.’ But I think that he also has an edge to him that we don’t see yet, that we’re going to see [eventually]. And this is all just speculation, because I have no idea what happens next. But as of now, he’s a nice guy. He’s the guy that you go to if you want advice on how to pass a test. Or if you want advice on how to get the guy; even though he likes you, he’ll still give you advice.
Q: When we first meet Jake, he’s introduced as Paige and Cassie’s friend, but it quickly becomes clear that he and Paige have feelings for each other. How did you, Georgie Flores, and Bella Thorne work out that dynamic?
Charlie DePew: Georgie was just super sweet right away, just the nicest girl ever. And over the course of the season, she actually became like a big sister to me. I’d go to her for all sorts of advice. So from the start, we were super friendly. As for Bella, I had known her for quite a long time before the series. I tested to play Deuce on Shake It Up! and I ended up getting a tiny role in the pilot. We became friends from there, so when I showed up to set, it was a kind of like a reunion. The sexual tension was difficult though, all the lovey-dovey stuff in the first episode. I hadn’t done that with Bella before. But after we did a take or two, it was totally cool.
Q: One of the main sources of conflict is the fact that Jake and Paige grow apart when she starts to become famous. Growing apart from friends is definitely something a lot of people experience; can you relate to Jake in any way?
Charlie DePew: Growing apart from people is something that I definitely understand – I’ve been there. I was in seventh grade when I became an actor. Friends of mine that I had for years thought it was weird that I was pursuing a career so early. And so, some people pulled out of my life. My thought was like, ‘If they’re going to pull out of my life, then I didn’t need them there in the first place.’
But I relate to Jake on so many levels. Jake’s a screenwriter, and I also write. There’s a lot of similarities. I think everybody shares a little bit of a twist with the character they play.
Q: As an actor yourself, do you think the series paints an accurate portrayal of what it’s like to be a star?
Charlie DePew: As far as the characters go, it’s pretty real. The Alexis Glenns of the world exist. The Rainer Devons exist. And the Paige Townsens of the world – the girls that just come out of nothing and rise to stardom really quickly – they exist, too. And in many ways, I would say Jake Salt is like a 22-year-old Matt Damon. Because Matt Damon was writing early on in his career, and was motivated and ambitious about that. I think there are a lot of symbiotic things you see in real life and the Famous in Love universe. You see the fame. You see the money. You see the cars. The celebrity lifestyle, for sure.
