Chris Licht Career
Before joining the Late Show, Licht was the executive producer of CBS This Morning starting when the show launched in 2012, and vice president of programming at CBS News since 2011. Before joining CBS, he worked at MSNBC. At MSNBC, he was the founding executive producer of Morning Joe, which he and host Joe Scarborough helped create prior to its launch in 2007.
While in charge of CBS This Morning, he was credited with making the show unexpectedly successful, giving CBS its most competitive place in the morning show race in almost 30 years. This success occurred partly because Licht allowed the show’s co-hosts, and Norah O’Donnell, to talk freely about news events and about themselves.
A month after he was named executive producer and showrunner of the Late Show, the show saw its largest weekly audience since February 19 of that year. As executive producer, he focused on management issues that host Stephen Colbert had previously handled, as well as shortening the opening credits and adding a comedy sketch immediately before them.

As it approaches 10 weeks in a row as the most-watched late night show the New York Times delves into what’s making CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert click with viewers. Ironically, much of the credit goes to Donald Trump and Colbert’s anti-Trump point of view. But the changes began a year ago when Chris Licht, who had relaunched CBS’s morning show, and co-created MSNBC’s Morning Joe, was named ep of The Late Show.
Licht and Colbert met for a three-hour drink and hit it off instantly. To make things work, Colbert had to cede his “control freak” nature, and Licht had to refrain from debating Colbert about “what’s funny.”

What I Learned When I Almost Died
Besides being a television newsman and producer he is also known for being a talented writer and an author of the book what I learned when I Almost Died His first book, which was published in 2011.
Licht had always been ambitious. When he was only nine years old, he tracked down an NBC correspondent while on vacation to solicit advice for a career in television. At eleven, he began filming himself as he delivered the news. And by the time he was thirty-five, he landed his dream job: a fast-paced, demanding spot at the helm of MSNBC’s Morning Joe one of the most popular shows on cable TV.
He had become a real-life Jerry Maguire: hard-charging, obsessively competitive, and willing to sacrifice anything to get it done. He felt invincible. Then one day Chris heard a pop in his head, followed by a whoosh of blood and crippling pain. Doctors at the ER said he had suffered a near-deadly brain hemorrhage. Chris’s life had almost been cut short, and he had eight long days in a hospital bed to think about it.
What I Learned When I Almost Died tells the story of what happened next.
