Craig Robinson Education

Craig Robinson learned to read by the age of four at home and skipped the second grade in school. He then attended the parochial Mount Carmel High School, graduating in 1979 as class valedictorian.

Robinson’s father insisted that he attend Princeton University when Robinson was considering what college to go to. This preference was due to Princeton’s Ivy League academics rather than either the University of Washington or Purdue University, which offered scholarships and major basketball conference play.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1983, completing his senior thesis on social stratification in prisons. Craig Robinson continued his education, earning his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago in 1992 and became a bond trader as vice president of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and managing director at Loop Capital Markets.

He left his well paying job to return to basketball, this time as an assistant coach to Bill Carmody at Northwestern University, for six years to where he was an effective recruiter. In 2006, Robinson became a head coach at Brown University where he ran a variation of the Princeton offense which he learned from Pete Carril during his years at Princeton.

Robinson stressed work ethic, used tough love, and tried to improve the players’ vocabulary in improving a mid-level basketball program. A fifth-place placing with a strong finish to the season garnered Robinson the Ivy League men’s basketball Coach of the Year for the 2006–2007 season by Basketball-U.com.
