The fitness instructor was born in a family of four children of Joe Katnich and Rita Austin. She has three sisters and a brother. Their father was a professional baseball player with the St. Louis Browns.

She went to the University of Arizona on an athletic (gymnastics) scholarship. At the university, Denise reached the rank of number 9 in the NCAA on balance beam. Denise Austin Career
Since her university days and eventual graduation, Denise has been producing fitness shows, teaching classes, writing books and columns on exercise and staying fit and creating exercise videotapes as well. She was named on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, in 2002 and had her second term beginning in 2006.
She is notably known for emphasizing on naturally staying fit with herself as an example of one who exercises for 30 minutes in a day and does not skip meals. She also says that she prefers the use of sugar and butter over artificial sweeteners and margarine, though she advises on portion control, proper nutrient balance, and exercise.
Denise encourages people to stay fit at all ages and conducts research with experts in nutrition, to emphasize realistic, real-life solutions to weight control and fitness. She also supports a balanced program of exercise and proper diet and encourages people to stay away from quick fixes (fad diets or “crazy claims”). She integrates various methods in her exercise programs, such as yoga, Pilates, cross training and aerobic exercise.
On ESPN2, Austin had a long-running exercise television program called Getting Fit with Denise Austin. The show’s reruns can currently be seen on ESPN Classic and Altitude Sports and Entertainment. It moved to weekday mornings on Lifetime Television where it was renamed Fit and Lite and Denise Austin’s Daily Workout.
Austin produced these shows each fall spending four months on location in resorts in the Caribbean and Arizona. However, in April 2008, Lifetime canceled the shows.
Austin said she was developing a new TV show later that year with its planning stages being in 2010. According to The Washington Post, Austin was headed back to Lifetime in January 2011. She is on the morning program The Balancing Act. The show that Austin had talked about on her website that was to debut in the fall of 2008 did not debut. When she was interviewed by Erin Whitehead in 2009, it was reported that her new show would be back on in the fall of that year.
In April 2007, the Washington City Paper, a Washington, D.C. alternative weekly newspaper, featured an article on Austin under their Cheap Seat column where she was questioned about how some of her exercise shows on YouTube are like pornography to some people. Austin said that she was totally unaware. She also reportedly said, with a giggle, that she was worried about it.
