Devin Gardner Biography

Devin Gardner, born Devin Jaymes Gardner, is an American football quarterback. He is a free agent at the time and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New England Patriots. In high school, as a senior, he was rated as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the United States by Rivals.com and the No. 5 quarterback by ESPNU. During the first half of the 2012 season, he converted to the wide receiver position but switched back to quarterback to replace Denard Robinson who sustained an elbow injury.

High School Career:

As a sophomore, he played football for the University Of Detroit Jesus High School and Academy. He later transferred to Inkster High School prior to his junior season. There, he became the school’s quarterback. He also helped lead Inkster’s basketball team to the state semifinals in March 2009. In an interview with ESPN in the fall of 2009, he described his passion for the quarterback position: “With me, you better prepare for everything you think could happen because anything can happen when I’ve got the ball in my hands. I’ve got the ball in my hands every play, and it’s my show.”

He managed to accumulate very impressive stats as a junior and was thus invited to a number of combines and camps. Gardner earned counselor awards for best footwork and work in the classroom at the Elite 11 camp in 2009. In September 2009, Gardner was ranked as the top quarterback prospect in the United States by Rivals.com. He was ranked as the No. 4 quarterback nationally by Scout.com and the No. 5 quarterback in the ESPNU 150. In the last moments of his senior year in high school, Gardner played in the Under Armour All-America Game which he considered being one of the best experiences of his life.

College Career:

In the spring of 2009, Gardner gave a verbal commitment to Michigan. He received offers from more than 15 colleges, including Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Iowa, Florida, and LSU. He enrolled in early 2010. In his freshman year, he showed excellent results as foreseen in 2010 season by Tom Luginbill, national recruiting director of ESPN Scouts Inc.

His second season at Michigan, He played as a backup behind Denard Robinson. He was mostly featured in Al Borges’ “deuce formation” featuring Denard Robinson in either the slot receiver position, or at running back, and with him at the quarterback position.

In his third season, he was converted to wide receiver. He got back to his position of quarterback following an injury to the quarterback, Denard Robinson. After the season, He became the second quarterback in Michigan history to account for six touchdowns in a game, Steve Smith having accomplished the feat in 1981 and again in 1983.

Gardner was placed as the starting quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines football team in the 2013 season. Right before the 2013 Notre Dame game, he garnered the No. 98 Michigan Football Legends jersey in honor of Tom Harmon and became the first player to wear the No. 98 jersey since Harmon’s graduation after the 1940 season. Against Indiana, he broke John Navarre’s single-game record of 503 passing yards, and also Denard Robinson’s record Michigan record of 584 yards of total offense.

Professional Career:

He agreed to sign a contract with the New England Patriots. On the 18th of May 2015, he was released from the Patriots and was claimed by Pittsburgh Steelers the next day. Here he practiced as a quarterback instead of a receiver. Unfortunately, he never made it into the team and was released on the 17th of August the same year. Next, he played for the Nojima Sagamihara Rise of Japan’s X-League. The team ranked at #3 in the Central Division and for his efforts, he was awarded the 2016 X-League Rookie of the Year award. Gardner was signed by the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 27, 2018, who released him the month after.
