She was the daughter of Regina “Jeanne” Menahan, a silent film actress, and John Gerald Brennan, a doctor of Irish descent. She has a sister known as Kathleen Howard.

During her college days, Eileen Brennan began her acting career, initially appearing in the stage production of’ Arsenic and Old Lace.’ Soon after that, she landed the titular role in the musical’ Little Mary Sunshine’ off-Broadway and won an Obie Award for her performance. She played Annie Sullivan’s role in Arthur Penn’s’ The Miracle Worker’ in 1961 and then appeared in’ Hello, Dolly.’

Brennan made her film debut in 1967 when she was cast in the satirical comedy “Divorce American Style.” She became a semi-regular on’ Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’ the following year. Next she starred as Genevieve in the drama flick’ The Last Picture Show’ for which she was nominated for the BAFTA Award.

She appeared in the movies ‘ The Sting,” Murder by Death’ and’ The Cheap Detective’ in the following years. The next actress played Felicia Winters in the sitcom ‘ 13 Queens Boulevard’ in 1979.

She joined the cast of ABC’s’ A New Kind of Family’ as Kit Flanagan in 1979. Two years later, she starred in an episode of’ Taxi’ and won a nomination for her appearance for the Primetime Emmy Award. Following her appearances in’ The Love Boat’ and’ Off the Rack,’ Brennan won another Emmy nomination for her guest role in the drama’ Newhart.’

In 1990, she featured in’ Stella’ as Mrs. Wilkerson, a drama film about an unsophisticated single mother who makes a selfless sacrifice to give her daughter all the opportunities she never had.

In 1991, Brennan was again nominated for an Emmy for her guest appearance in an episode of’ Thirtysomething.’ Soon after that, she played a voice role in the animated series’ All-New Dennis The Menace.’

She played Sister Margaret in the dark comedy ‘ Reckless’ in 1995. She was cast in the drama series ‘ 7th Heaven’ as Gladys Bink. She starred in the sitcom’ Will & Grace’ as Zandra from 2001 to 2006. During this time, Brennan also played roles in the movies ‘ Jeepers Creepers,” Comic Book Villains’ and’ The Hollow.’
