Elizabeth McGovern Biography

Elizabeth McGovern, born Elizabeth Lee McGovern, is an American film, television and theatre actress. She has appeared in several notable films such as Ragtime, Downton Abbey, Ordinary People, Once Upon a Time in America, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Wings of the Dove, and The Chaperone.

Elizabeth was born on the 18th of July 1981 in Evanston, Illinois to Katherine Wolcott (born Watts), and William Montgomery McGovern, Jr., a university professor. She was the oldest with a younger sister named Cammie McGovern, an author/novelist. While she was still very young, the family moves to Los Angeles where her father started teaching at UCLA. She performed in Thornton Wilder’s play, “The Skin Of Our Teeth”. Joan Scott, an agent, found her quite exceptional and adviced her to seek out some acting classes.

Early Career

Subsequently, she joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. On the side, she pursued her bachelor’s degree in drama from the Juilliard School in New York from 1979-81. While still studying at Julliard, she made her film debut in “Ordinary People” playing as the girlfriend of troubled teenager Conrad Jarrett (portrayed by Timothy Hutton). She completed her studies the year after then she started appearing in plays and off-broadway productions.

In 1981, she got a breakthrough role in “Ragtime” portraying Evelyn Nesbit. Abut 3 years later, she starred in “Once Upon a Time in America” as Deborah Gelly, the love interest of Robert De Niro’s character. That same year, she also had roles in “Racing with the Moon” and “Lovesick”. In 1989, she played n “Johnny Handsome” as the girlfriend of Mickey Rourke’s character. She also appeared in “The Handmaid’s Tale” in that same year.

Since then, she has appeared in several other films such as “She’s Having a Baby” with Kevin Bacon, “The Bedroom Window”, and “A Shock to The System” with Michael Caine.

Television

Elizabeth McGovern’s roles in television productions have been several, most of which have been in the UK. One of her well-known TV roles was as Marguerite St. Just in a BBC TV series based on “The Scarlet Pimpernel” in 1999 and 2000. In 2006, she made another notable appearance in an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as Dr. Faith Sutton. The year after, she portrayed Ellen Doubleday, Daphne du Maurier’s paramour, in Daphne on BBC2.

Elizabeth has since appeared in several other TV shows such as “Appointment with Death”, “Agatha Christie’s Poirot”, “Freezing”, and “Downton Abbey”.

Music

In addition to acting, Elizabeth McGovern is also a singer and songwriter. She has been serving as the front of the band ‘Sadie and the Hotheads’ since 2008 in London.
