Her sister, Lise, is a forensic psychiatrist in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2006, Lise was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate. Her brother, Dirk Van Susteren, was a journalist and long-time editor of the Vermont Sunday magazine, jointly published, until folding in 2008, by the Rutland Herald and the Barre Montpelier Times Argus.

She graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton in 1972 and the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1976, where she studied geography and economics. She later earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979 and prior to the start of her television work returned to Georgetown Law as an adjunct faculty member in addition to her full-time legal career. She was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Stetson Law School.

She joined MSNBC from Fox News Channel, where she hosted “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” for 14 years. Previously, she spent more than a decade at CNN, where she served as a legal analyst and co-host of “Burden of Proof” and hosted the news program “The Point.” She is an experienced breaking news anchor and has traveled the world – including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, North Korea, Sudan, and more – often with Presidents, Secretaries of State and Defense, and other leaders. She also has an impressive history of interviewing prominent figures in the entertainment and sports industries.

She sits on the Board of Directors at the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and was recently dubbed one of the world’s 100 most powerful women by Forbes Magazine. She is the 2016 recipient of the IAC (Israeli American Council) “Honest and Fairness” award.
