Hal Williams is an American actor, best known for his recurring role as Police Officer Smith on Sanford and Son. His popularity is also because of the 1985–1990 NBC sitcom where he featured as the patriarch Lester Jenkins, the husband of Marla Gibbs’s character. Hal was born on December 14, 1938, Ohio, USA.
Before moving to Hollywood to pursue an acting career, he worked as a postal worker and corrections officer. Hal started his acting business in 1969 playing a role in the short film “Worthy to Stand”. The rest of the time saw him playing roles in abundant movies including “Hardcore”, “Private Benjamin”, and “The Rookie”, directed by Paul Schrader, Howard Zieff and Clint Eastwood respectively.
In 1971, Jimmy Stewart, who was the star of the show insisted the firing of Hal. His other notable television credits include Kung Fu, Gunsmoke, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Magnum, P.I.Hal is also the host of the long TV show, Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, nationally broadcast to collect money for charity. Moreover, he was also on the show 227 with his co-stars Marla Gibbs and Jackée Harry.
Additionally, his recognition is also an outcome of the film roles he tenured in Flight and Guess Who. After a six-year marriage, he divorced his second wife, Dr. Renee Himes, in March 1984. In 1994, The Sinbad Show was released and Hal acted opposite Sinbad. Hal Williams is a member of the famous “TV Actor” list. He was born Halroy Candis Williams.

Hal Williams the Waltons
Hal Williams came to Walton’s Mountain looking for work. He played as Harley Foster, Verdi Foster’s husband. They get married in season 2 after which they begin a family. Verdi and Harley adopt Josh, who is an orphan. Later in the story, we discover Harley is a wanted man who escaped from prison. He was convicted for killing a man in self-defense. John Walton gets a pardon for Harley from President Roosevelt.
When he appeared on “The Waltons”, Hal was already a veteran actor. He went on to show off his talents on the big screen after his role of Harley Foster on shows like “227,” and “The Sinbad Show”.
