Unlike its nearest competitor at the time, the more expensive and less convenient Linn LM-1, the 808, generates sounds using analog synthesis rather than playing samples. This drum machine was most used by the duo in their productions.

In a fruitful career that has spanned more than three decades, Jimmy Jam alongside his partner Terry Lewis have been fairly successful locally and as well as in the international scene. Their debut single, Optimistic served as a breakthrough track stressing positivity and encouragement to people.
The song served as a summer and fall anthem and began taking Lewis and Jam’s new label towards the top. Other successes followed with “Blackness” as well as music from labelmates Lo-Key?, Solo and Mint Condition. A point to note is that they had the opportunity to release the soundtrack for the 1992 motion picture Mo Money.
Executive produced by Jam and Lewis, the soundtrack featured cuts from Mint Condition, Caron Wheeler and, Ralph Tresvant as well as a duet song by Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross.
