Before kicking off her career as a journalist, Kent worked as a Fulbright Scholar in China, with her area of concentration limited to researching cases which bothered around the impact of legal aid for underprivileged women in sexual harassment and domestic abuse.
She started off her journalism career with ABC News as a digital reporter in Beijing Bureau. She handled the coverage of the Beijing Olympics 2008 as a web reporter. But that was just the beginning. Kent also had the live coverage of the 2008 Taiwan elections, the Sichuan earthquake and civil unrest in Tibet.
Between 2009 and 2011, Jo Ling Kent worked as an associate producer in Beijing for ABC. Her job with ABC was well documented and it attracted the likes of NBC News who came calling and she began working as a Campaign Embed reporter for them, still in 2011.
In 2012, she went to Connecticut to pick up a role as an Investigative and General Assignment reporter for the NBC. For their strides, Kent and her team also received the Peabody Award when they covered the Newtown school shooting.
