John F. Macarthur Quotes

“Why is discipline important? Discipline teaches us to operate by principle rather than desire. Saying no to our impulses (even the ones that are not inherently sinful) puts us in control of our appetites rather than vice versa. It deposes our lust and permits truth, virtue, and integrity to rule our minds instead.”

“You can’t confuse childlike faith with childish thinking.”

“The true gospel is a call to self-denial. It is not a call to self-fulfillment.”

“We should not be entertained by the sins for which Christ died.”

“Prayer is not an attempt to get God to agree with you or provide for your selfish desires, but that it is both an affirmation of His sovereignty, righteousness, and majesty and an exercise to conform your desires and purposes to His will and Glory”

“If I’m not showing grace . . . have I forgotten the grace I’ve been shown?”

“Scripture does what psychoanalysis can’t do-it pierces the heart, penetrates deep into the soul and judges the motives. To see yourself in the light of Scripture, is to see yourself as you really are.”

“People act what they truly believe.”

“What you cant forget… God cant remember!”

“Contrary to popular opinion, the most important characteristic of a godly mother is not her relationship with her children. It is her love for her husband. The love between husband and wife is the real key to a thriving family. A healthy home environment cannot be built exclusively on the parents’ love for their children. The properly situated family has marriage at the center; families shouldn’t revolve around the children.”

“Jesus Christ is not just ‘my personal Savior’. He is Lord.”

“The cross is proof of both the immense love of God and the profound wickedness of sin.”

“Christ’s atonement fully satisfied the demands of God’s righteousness, so forgiveness and mercy are guaranteed to those who receive Christ in humble, repentant faith.”

“It wasn’t a potential atonement actuated by the sinner, it was an actual atonement initiated by the savior.”

“He that lacks assurance of God’s love, converses too much with Satan”

“When believers have a low view of God, everything focuses on meeting felt needs within the body of Christ. When the church adopts such a perspective, it often offers people nothing more than spiritual placebos. It centers on psychology, self-esteem, entertainment, and a myriad of other diversions to attempt to meet perceived and felt needs.”

“Prayer is the spontaneous response of the believing heart to God. Those truly transformed by Jesus Christ find themselves lost in wonder and joy of communion with Him. Prayer is as natural for the Christian as breathing”

“The Lord accomplishes great things through weak people…What is required of His people is an obedient spirit, not a roster of tremendous gifts and abilities.”

“If I could simplify the Christian life to one thing, it would be obedience.”

“Without a proper view of God there cannot exist a proper view of man.”

“A true Christian does not see God’s promise of forgiveness as a license to sin, a way to abuse His love and presume on His grace. Rather, he sees God’s gracious forgiveness as the means to spiritual growth and sanctification. He continually thanks God for His great love and willingness to forgive.”

“We are not heard for our many words, but for the cry of our hearts.”

“Adam was refined dirt; Eve was a glorious refinement of humanity itself. -John MacArthur, Twelve Extraordinary Women”

“Because ours is such a free and prosperous society, it is easier for Christians to feel secure by presuming on instead of depending on God’s grace. Too many believers become satisfied with physical blessings and have little desire for spiritual blessings.”

John F Macarthur Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel          A critic of the tendency among some prominent evangelists, like Albert Mohler, to mix the Christian Gospel with the social gospel, MacArthur was a founding signatory of the Declaration on Social Justice and the Gospel, or simply the “Dallas Declaration.” MacArthur said of the social gospel, “Over the years, I have fought a number of polemical battles against ideas that threaten the gospel. I believe that this recent (and surprisingly sudden) detour in search of” social justice “is the most subtle and dangerous threat to date.”

John F Macarthur Psychology

MacArthur is also a Nouthetic Counseling advocate who emphasizes the Bible as a sufficient tool to advise people with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. MacArthur does not reject all psychological theories and techniques, although he sees some psychology and psychiatry as contrary to the Bible.

He argued that “True psychology (i.e. ‘ the study of the soul ‘) can only be done by Christians since only Christians have the resources to understand and transform the soul. Psychology’s secular discipline is based on godless assumptions and evolutionary foundations and is capable of dealing with people only superficially and only temporally …Modern psychology and the Bible cannot be blended without serious compromise to or utter abandonment of the principle of Scripture’s sufficiency…. ”

His position gave rise to a number of controversies, the most notable of which was the first time an evangelical church employee had ever been sued for misuse. The case was not brought to trial because a judge found the case to be insufficient

John F Macarthur Other Christian movements and other religions

His writings disapprove of the modern Christian “seeker-friendly” movement, as well as ministers running this church service style like Robert Schuller, Bill Hybels, and Rick Warren. He criticized popular pastor Joel Osteen’s Word of Faith, whom he called a quasi-pantheist.

In May 2002, in the midst of significant media and public attention focused on cases of Catholic sex abuse, MacArthur gave the entire system of Roman Catholic priesthood a highly critical message. MacArthur has referred to Catholicism as the “Kingdom of Satan,” and holds to the confession that the Pope is anti-Christ, but the term, he said, “applies to anyone who stands against or in Christ’s place.”

MacArthur states that a person who truly believes in everything that Roman Catholicism teaches does not have saving faith because the Roman Catholic way of salvation is based on works and is a “twisted system of satanic lies” presided over by the Pope.

John F Macarthur Christology

MacArthur first published his belief in the doctrine of “incarnational sonship” in 1983. He defended his views after some criticism in a plenary session of the Independent Fundamental Churches of America’s annual convention in 1989. In an article on MacArthur’s Grace to You website entitled “Reexamining Christ’s Eternal Sonship,” he retraces his views from 1983 onwards, concluding, “I want to state publicly that I have abandoned the doctrine of’ incarnational sonship.’ Careful study and reflection have led me to understand that Scripture is indeed presenting the relationship between God the Father and Christ the Son. I no longer regard Christ’s sonship as a role He assumed in His incarnation.”
