John McEnroe Biography

John McEnroe born John Patrick McEnroe Jr. is an American retired tennis player. He is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of professional tennis; known for his shot-making artistry and volleying skills at the tennis court.

Patrick was also known for frequently landing in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities for his confrontational on-court behavior. During his career, he won seven Grand Slam singles titles, four at the US Open and three at Wimbledon, and added nine men’s Grand Slam doubles titles. He was named the ATP Player of the Year and the ITF World Champion three times each: 1981, 1983, and 1984.

He was born to American parents namely Mr. John Patrick McEnroe Sr. and his wife Mrs.Kay. His father, John Sr, was a son of Irish immigrants. McEnroe’s Irish paternal grandfather was from Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan and his maternal grandmother was from County Westmeath. In 1960, the family moved to the New York City area, where McEnroe’s father worked daytime as an advertising agent while attending Fordham Law School by night.

The family relocated to the Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, New York when he was about nine months old, as his father was transferred back to the US. In 1961, they moved to Flushing, Queens, moving to Douglaston in 1963.

McEnroe was raised up in Douglaston, Queens, New York City. He took interest in tennis and started playing when he was eight, at the nearby Douglaston Club. When he was nine, his parents enrolled him in the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association, and he soon started playing regional tournaments. He then began competing in national juniors tournaments, and at twelve—when he was ranked seventh in his age group—he joined the Port Washington Tennis Academy, Long Island, New York.

In 2010, he founded the John McEnroe Tennis Academy; an $18 million tennis complex situated on Randall’s Island in New York City. He launched the Academy in collaboration with Claude Okin, managing partner of Sportime New York. McEnroe’s teaching philosophy emphasizes short intense periods of tennis training balanced by plenty of time pursuing other sports and activities.

Some of the alumni include Noah Rubin and Jamie Loeb. Through various channels, including community outreach, the Academy works to recruit the most talented and the most highly motivated young athletes in the New York City Metropolitan area, and beyond.

After his retirement from tennis; McEnroe began pursuing his dream as a musician. He learned how to play the guitar with the help of his close pals like Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Allen and went on to establish a music group called The Johny Smyth Band, of which he was the lead singer and guitarist. He began writing his own songs and was invited to perform at some notable events. His band embarked on a tour for about two years before he ended it in 1997, just before completing his album.
