Karen Allen is an American film and stage actress. In 1978, after making her film debut in Animal House.
She became best known for her portrayal of Marion Ravenwood opposite Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. She later reprises the role for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008. She also co-starred in Starman in 1984 and Scrooged in 1988. In 2003, Allen started her own textile company after she developed an affinity for knitting. It was named Karen Allen Fiber Arts, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Allen knits with a Japanese-made knitting machine the items that the company sells. She was awarded an honorary master’s degree from The Fashion Institute of Technology in 2009 for her work in the textile arts. Allen teaches acting at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, located in Great Barrington. She currently lives in Massachusetts and also teaches yoga.

At 17 years, after she graduated from DuVal High School, in Lanham, Maryland. She moved to New York City to study art and design at Fashion Institute of Technology for two years.
Allen later ran a boutique on the University of Maryland campus. She spent time traveling through South and Central Asia. She attended George Washington University and began to study and perform with the experimental company. The Washington Theatre Laboratory, in Washington, D.C. Allen joined Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts in 1974. She moved back to New York City and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute three years later.

In 1978, she made her major film debut in National Lampoon’s Animal House. In 1979, followed her next two film appearances in The Wanderers and in 1980 A Small Circle of Friends. Here she played one of three radical college students during the 1960s. In 1979, she appeared as a guest star pilot episode of the long-running CBS series Knots Landing. She also played Annie Fairgate, the daughter of Don Murray’s character Sid Fairgate and Sid’s first wife Susan Philby.
Her career-changing role came with the blockbuster hit Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, directed by Steven Spielberg. She played the love interest of Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford); a feisty heroine Marion Ravenwood. Allen won a Saturn Award for Best Actress for her performance. She co-starred with Jeff Bridges in the science fiction film Starman in 1984. Allen debuted on Broadway in the 1982 production The Monday After The Miracle.
