Kate Botello Biography

Kate Botello is a former American television personality best known for her work on the San Francisco, California-based ZDTV (later known as TechTV and now known as G4).

Kate comes to Northern Michigan via New York City, where she was a freelance actor, singer and playwright, appearing Off-Broadway as Judy Garland in the underground hit, Christmas with the Crawfords. She wrote and starred in several Judy Garland-themed productions, including Judy’s Christmas Garland and Judy Garland and Uninvited Company — for which she was nominated for a Nightlife Award and won a Backstage Bistro award.

Before her time in New York, Kate was one of the founding on-air personalities for ZDTV, a national television network (later to become TechTV). There, she hosted “The Screen Savers,” a live daily call-in show co-starring tech guru Leo Laporte, as well as “Extended Play,” a show about videogames and the gaming industry with co-host Adam Sessler. She also puppeteered and provided the voice for Tilde, the network’s “virtual host” – work for which she won an Emmy Award.

Kate Botello has lived in Traverse City, Michigan since 2005, and is delighted by the huge amount of talent and art available to people in our area. She directed and starred in many productions for the Old Town Playhouse and Young Company, and led the OTP’s Summer Performing Arts Camp for four years.

Kate has even had a chance to make a few dreams come true, including hosting live “Sing-a-Long” events at the State Theatre, narrating stories with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and serving as the official “Word Pronouncer” for the Traverse City County and Regional Spelling Bees.

Kate brings a lifetime love of classical music to IPR and is thrilled by discoveries of beautiful pieces, new and old, to share with you.

The Screen Savers

She began her television career in 1998 co-hosting the technology-oriented television program The Screen Savers alongside Leo Laporte. In 1999, Botello and Laporte were described as “the two most popular personalities on the only 24-hour national cable channel devoted exclusively to computers and the Internet”.

When the pair appeared at a promotional event in York, Pennsylvania that year: “Geeks swarmed the local electronics store where Kate Botello and Leo Laporte were signing autographs. Security had to be called to help guide the two computer advice experts to their car.”

Kate Botello Husband | Married

Dear Amanda – My husband brought me a surprise ukulele on a terrible day; then immediately played your “Ukulele Anthem,” on Spotify…THANK YOU!! It made me feel free to make whatever music I wanted to, without judging the result. That’s pretty magical.

I’m sure you know… Last week, our Arts show theme was the uke, so I played a snippet (we ran out of time, so it’s only: 10) of the “Anthem,” and gave you a little musical shout-out at the end (that I wouldn’t have even tried without your inspiration). Thank you for being such a wonderful Muse to the uke noodlers of the world (and lots of other people!).

Judy Garland impersonation

Botello left TechTV in 2002 and moved to Brooklyn, New York where she worked on Broadway as a freelance actor, singer, and playwright. In her time there, she starred Off-Broadway as Judy Garland in the cabaret musical, Judy Garland and the Uninvited Company and the annual holiday musical, Judy’s Christmas Garland.

The cabaret show later toured other cities. A critic wrote that “Botello nails Garland’s familiar speaking voice, singing voice, and facial expressions”.
