Kellita was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Oakland, California. She attended Oakland Community Learning Center, a historical educational facility founded by the Black Panthers and later joined Santa Rosa Junior college graduating in 1989 with a Degree in Political Science.

Kerita began her career as a model before venturing into acting where she began with stage acting making her first theatre appearance in regional productions of Tell It Like It Tiz. In 1996 she won an NAACP Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Theatre Company, Feelings.
