He was born and raised up on the south side of Youngstown, Ohio, in the traditional ethnic Slovak neighborhood of Lansingville. He attended  Lowellville High School and Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in 2000. He was trained by Jack Loew of Youngstown’s South Side Boxing Gym for his entire career. 

Kelly Pavlik Professional Boxing career

In 2000, he became a professional boxer and went ahead to win his first 26 fights before stepping up in competition on October 7, 2005, to face Fulgencio Zúñiga for NABF Middleweight title. He dominated the fight from the second round till the ninth round when the fight was stopped due to Zuniga’s right eye that was cut over by the clash of heads.
On July 7, 2006, he defeated Bronco McKart the former  WBO Light Middleweight Champion with a sixth-round technical knock out in the first defense of his NABF Middleweight title. He knocked Bronco down twice in the sixth round before the referee stopped the fight. On November 2, 2006, he headlined in his hometown at the Covelli Centre where he dominated the fight against Lenord Pierre. The fight was stopped by the referee in the fourth round after he knocked down Pierre again with the left hook.
On January 27, 2007, he faced Jose Luis Zertuche in Anaheim, California, and defeated Luis in the eighth-round knockout in the second and final defense of his NABF Middleweight title. It was a fast-paced and exciting fight.

The case was later turned to a felonious assault after it was presented to a grand jury.
