Kevin Dietz Biography
Kevin Dietz is an American award-winning investigative reporter. He joined the local 4 Defenders investigative unit in 1996. Dietz holds 13 Michigan Emmys in his name. He earned one of the awards for a story exposing an illegal abortion clinic. Kevin has covered the Persian Gulf War from Saudi Arabia, flew a fighter jet with the famous Blue Angels. He has twice been honored with the Agnes Scott Leadership Award for commitment in the fight against substance abuse. His best and the proudest moment came when he helped clear a 13-year-old girl of murder charges. He managed to show how the 5-year-old victim suffered from seizures and actually drowned in the bathtub.

Dietz began his career at WPBN in Traverse City in 1987. He then moved on to WLNS in Lansing. He later stayed in WOOD in Grand Rapids, before coming back to Detroit. Kevin has been at WDIV since June 1993. He joined the Local 4 Defenders investigative unit in 1996. Kevin has won 15 Michigan Emmys including 2 this year for investigations of police brutality in Inkster and a jail death in Macomb County. He has been recognized for fishing out details and being the first to break the story.
Kevin’s amazing work this year was rewarded with two Michigan Association of Broadcasters awards, one for the best reporter, the other for best investigation. His jail death series earned him a regional Edward R Murrow award and his police brutality series captured a “Wade McCree Jr. Justice award.” This year Kevin was also named the first-ever recipient of WDIV’s “Roger Weber Award”. This is given for integrity in Journalism.
He previously won a regional Edward R Murrow award for his ongoing coverage of former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. His work has been honored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for exposing faulty fire trucks in the Detroit Fire Department. Dietz has been awarded several Associated Press awards, such as one for living on the streets of Traverse City during an undercover look at the struggles of the homeless population. He has twice been honored with the Agnes Scott Leadership Award for commitment in the fight against substance abuse.

Kevin Dietz Jail | DUI
Dietz was arrested in 2013 for driving under the influence. Award-winning WDIV-TV investigative reporter admitted to a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The Dietz story also put the station in a journalistic spotlight. In the past, WDIV has moved quickly to report on the legal troubles of TV personalities at rival stations.
In a statement, Dietz apologized.
“I am deeply sorry for my actions. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, WDIV and to the viewers. I accept full responsibility and am taking the necessary steps to deal with this matter.”
According to the 48th District Court, Dietz was sentenced on April and ordered to pay $1,725 in fines and court costs. He was also ordered to serve 18 months of probation. This meant attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and undergoing treatment.
According to Michigan Secretary of State records, he was arrested by Bloomfield Hills police on Feb. 2 for operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of .17 or more.
The record indicated Dietz refused a breathalyzer test. Under the state’s super drunk law results in an automatic one-year driver’s license suspension. According to the secretary of state, Dietz’s license was suspended until May 7, 2014.
