Kristen Van Dyke Biography
Kristen Van Dyke is an American journalist who was born and raised in South Carolina. The eldest daughter in her family, she has two siblings. She always loved nature and is an avid star gazer. Her love of the sky and the spontaneity of weather is what led her to begin a career in meteorology. When she is not in the studio, she enjoys hiking and mountain biking.as also learned to snowboard there. She often takes her two dogs, Ranger-part coyote-and Harper, with her when she explores Utah’s deserts.

Kristen Van Dyke Education
Kristen first went to college in 2000 at a South Carolina-based school, the College of Charleston. Founded in 1770, it is one of the nation’s oldest schools and takes pride in the history that surrounds both it and the city it was built in. In 2005, Van graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Media Studies
In 2006, she enrolled in school again, this time at Mississippi State University, one of the largest universities in the South. She graduated in 2009 with another Bachelor’s degree, this time in geosciences. After gaining her geoscience degree, she earned an American Meteorological Society, or AMS, Seal of Approval.

Kristen creates a clear demarcation between her personal and professional life. While much is known and seen about her professional life, she keeps her personal life out of the media. Although it is a known fact that Kristen got married in December of the year 2018 to her longtime boyfriend, Tom Nelson; not much is known about their relationship. They currently reside in salt lake city with her two dogs.

Dyke is 5 feet 3 inches tall. Although she is not very tall, she has managed to tower over some pretty giant challenges. The exceptional meteorologist was once diagnosed as having melanoma (a highly malignant skin tumor) in the early stage. She was able to treat and overcome it due to the early diagnosis.

Kristen started forecasting at WPDE, a local news station at her home state in South Carolina. At the time, she covered and reported numerous tropical storms and even Hurricane Ernesto in South Carolina and Florida.
The brilliant meteorologist was also one of the people that forecasted the deadly tornado outbreak which battered the south in March 2008. She worked at this station as a weekend meteorologist until September 2010 which was about a year after she finished from Mississippi.
Following a fruitful career in her home state, Kristen saw the need to venture out of her comfort zone. She got an opportunity and soon relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Not the type to be daunted by any challenge, she was to explore another aspect of her career. She became the host of the program “New Mexico Style” that covered various local features and interesting lifestyle news which she presented for KASA Fox 2 and KRQE News 13.
The program was a starting point and stepping stone for her as Kristen was later promoted to being the morning and noon meteorologist for the two stations. She maintained this position for 3 years until April 2014.
Soon after she left the station, she moves again after getting an offer to become the chief meteorologist at KOIN 6 an affiliate of CBS in Portland. She worked in this capacity for three years before leaving the network in May 2017. She gave family and personal reasons as her cause of leaving.
In the year 2017, Kristen joined the Fox 13 KSTU team as a chief meteorologist. A position she maintains till today. She says about her move to Utah that she has been enchanted by the terrains and mountains since she was a teenager. Kristen learned how to snowboard and ski in Utah and has spent lots of vacation there.

Kristen Van Dyke Storms To Continue In Utah Through Sunday

A stormy weather pattern has set up across much of Utah bringing showers and thunderstorms area-wide with higher elevation snow.
Showers are widespread in central and southern Utah Thursday afternoon, but the storm activity will head north this evening and overnight bringing wet roads to valleys & winter travel to mountain passes and summits.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect through Friday morning at elevations above 6,000 feet, including the Wasatch mountains, central and southern mountains & Castle country.
Expect 6-12+ additional inches of snow accumulation in Utah’s mountains. Drier weather moves in for southern Utah Friday, but northern Utah will continue to see occasional showers through the day.
A second, colder system moves in Saturday to bring more widespread showers across the state. Expect mainly rain for northern valleys, but it’s possible we could see an occasional winter mix by early Sunday morning.
A drier weather pattern begins to set up Monday.
