Kristi Toliver Bio

Kristi Toliver is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Mystics of the Women’s National Basketball Association. She was born, Kristi Renee Toliver, on January 27, 1987, in  Virginia, the U.S. and possesses dual American-Slovak citizenship. During her rookie season in the WNBA, she signed an approval deal with Nike.

Her parents are George Toliver, the former NBA referee, and Peggy Toliver. In 2005, Kristi Toliver graduated from Harrisonburg High School. During her time in school, she received many basketball awards. She was honored as a McDonald’s All-American, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-American, Parade All-American, EA Sports All-American, and USA Today All-USA Basketball Team member.

Besides that, she was named Virginia State Gatorade Player of the Year and Virginia Ms. Basketball. In 2005, Kristi participated in WBCA High School All-America Game and McDonald’s All-American Game. Later, she attended the University of Maryland and was known for her ability to perform under pressure.

As a freshman in 2006, Kristi hit a game-tying three-pointer with only seconds remaining to force overtime against favored Duke-National in the National Championship game. This led to a Maryland win and the school’s first national championship in women’s basketball.

Kristi started off with WNBA in the 2009 WNBA draft. This is where the Chicago Sky selected Kristi with the 3rd pick. Just before the start of the 2010 season, she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for a 2011 second round draft pick. Toliver was the back-up point guard on the roster during her first season with the Sparks. The starting point guard was Ticha Penicheiro.

In the 2012 season, she became the starting point guard for the Sparks and had a breakout season. In May 2012, Toliver hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against the Tulsa Shock. The same year in August, she was named to the All-WNBA Second Team and won the WNBA Most Improved Player Award.

The following season, 2013, saw her rookie contract with the Sky expire. This made her resign with the Sparks to a multi-year deal. During this season, Kristi was named a WNBA All-Star for the first time in her career, while averaging 14.1 points per game in all 34 games.

During the 2015 season, Harding yielded her point guard position and so Kristi Toliver was assigned back to the position. She finished the season averaging 12.4 points per game.

In the 2016 season, Kristi was ranked 4th in three-point field goal percentage while averaging 13.2 points per game during the regular season. On June 24, 2016, she won her first WNBA championship with the Sparks as they defeated the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in the Finals. Kristi signed with the Washington Mystics on February 2017, in free agency. In the semi-finals, the Mystics would be defeated by the Minnesota Lynx in a 3-game sweep.

The next season saw Kristi score a season-high 30 points in a 103-95 victory against the Phoenix Mercury. Later on, in the 2018 season, Kristi was voted into the 2018 WNBA All-Star Game, marking her second all-star appearance. Toliver finished off the season with 13.9 points per game with career-highs in free throw shooting and minutes. Kristi Toliver is currently the Sparks franchise leader in three-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage.

Kristi will still be an active WNBA player while being on the Wizards’ coaching staff. The other female coaches finished their playing careers before beginning their coaching ones, so the Wizards and Mystics have a chance to be first in that respect.
