Lee Goldberg Facts

1. He credits the blizzard of 1978 — and Hurricane Gloria seven years later — with sparking his interest in meteorology. “I liked the idea of this amazing weather and the fact that we could actually tell the future about it,” he says.

2. He made his TV debut forecasting the weather for a cable station in his hometown of Canton, Massachusetts at the age of 13. “I had my bar mitzvah suit and my braces on,” he says. “They knew I was a weather watcher for the local TV stations… I mimicked the Weather Channel.”

3. His wife, Jessica, was his middle-school sweetheart. “My first date with her was in 1985,” says Goldberg. “What’s funny is we’re sitting next to each other in the nursery school picture.”

4. As a teenager, he played tennis and basketball. “Basketball only lasted for a while because they don’t grow anybody over 5′ 6″ in my house,” he says. “That’s the No. 1 comment when people see me off camera: ‘I thought you were taller, and you look better off camera.’ ”

5. He’s a big Red Sox fan. “New York has been so good to me and my family, but I do keep my loyalty to my sports team,” he says.

6. He and his family moved to Rye Brook a few years after coming to New York in 1996 for the job with WABC-TV. When they took a drive to Somers, they loved it immediately. “It’s gorgeous, it’s sort of country, and it’s a nice escape from the city,” he says.

7. He loves going to his kids’ games. Emily, 14, is a goalie for her high school field hockey team and Ethan, 12, plays baseball and runs cross country.

8. The family has two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels named Fenway and Poppie — “As in Big Papi, the cleanup hitter on the Red Sox,” he says.

9. Goldberg is actively involved with two charities: the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), which held its annual fundraising walk in New Rochelle last month.

10. His son’s bar mitzvah is coming up in February — but meteorologically speaking, the date holds little significance. “I don’t know if we’re taking our chances with that, climatologically,” he says. “Statistically, it’s a snowier time of year, but it can easily turn out to be partly cloudy and 45.”
