Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is a private Jesuit and Marymount research university in Los Angeles, California. The university is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and one of five Marymount institutions of higher education.
Loyola Marymount University traces its history through Loyola College, founded in 1917 as the successor to St. Vincent’s College which was founded in 1865, and Marymount College, founded in 1933 with its roots in Marymount School which was founded in 1923. Loyola Marymount, which sits atop the bluffs overlooking Marina Del Rey and Playa Del Rey is the parent school to Loyola Law School located in downtown Los Angeles.
As of 2010, it is one of the largest Roman Catholic universities on the West Coast with just over 9,000 undergraduate, graduate and law school students.

Loyola Marymount University Basketball
The Loyola Marymount Lions men’s basketball team represents this University in men’s college basketball. The team currently competes in the West Coast Conference. The team has played its home game at Gersten Pavilion since 1981.
The university’s last appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament was in 1990, where they advanced to the Elite Eight. They lost to eventual national champion UNLV. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, Lions star player Hank Gathers died during the West Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament from a heart condition.
The Lions defeated New Mexico State, defending champion Michigan, and Alabama. The 1990 squad was also the highest-scoring team in NCAA Division I history with an average of 122 points per game.

All first-time freshmen are eligible for the scholarships described below. Equal opportunity will be provided for all incoming freshman applicants for scholarship consideration on the basis of their demonstrated academic ability and merit without discrimination on the basis of their race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, age, disability, and status with the armed forces unless otherwise stated in the scholarship guidelines.
Full-time enrollment (12-18 units) is required each semester to receive these awards. All awards may be adjusted if you receive additional federal, state, or institutional aid after your scholarship is awarded. All LMU merit-based scholarships are applied to billable costs only; funding is not provided to cover non-LMU expenses. Awards are available for a maximum of eight semesters of enrollment and are not available for summer enrollment or enrollment in a non-LMU study abroad programs.

The Rains Library, spread across two Frank Gehry-designed buildings on the downtown L.A. campus of Loyola Law School, is one of the largest private law libraries in the western United States. An expert staff of 30 law librarians assists students and faculty in researching the library’s extensive collection of more than a half million volumes and dozens of electronic databases covering California, U.S., and international law.
