Michael Wilding Biography

Michael Wilding was an English stage, television, and film actor. He is best popularly known for a series of films he made with Anna Neagle, for the two films he made with Alfred Hitchcock and for being the second husband of Elizabeth Taylor.

His full names are Michael Charles Gauntlet Wilding. Born (23 July 1912 and educated at Christ’s Hospital in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, England, Wilding left home at the age of 17 and trained as a commercial artist. When he was 20, he came to Europe and supported himself by doing sketches in Europe. He wanted to get into developing film sets and in 1933 approached a London film studio in search of a job. They encouraged him to work as an extra.

He made his stage debut for the Watford Repertory Company in The Ringer in 1934 and made the following year his London stage debut in Chase the Ace. In the movies Late Extra (1935), When Knights Were Bold (1936), and Wedding Group (1936), he could be found. He was on stage in two musicals, Spread It Abroad and Home and Beauty.

In 1937–38 he toured Australia and New Zealand with Fay Compton’s stage company. The plays included Personal Appearance, Victoria Regina, Tonight at Eight-Thirty and George and Margaret. While in Australia he filmed a prologue for Personal Appearance. He appeared in the first Gate Revue back in England, then followed with another magazine, Let’s Face It and a pantomime, Who’s Taking Liberty.

In There Ain’t No Justice (1939), Convoy (1940), and Bloomsbury’s Tilly (1940), he had larger film components. In Sailors Three (1940), he played a good role, and in Sailors Don’t Care (1940). Wilding played a major role in the Spring Meeting (1941), but was back in The Farmer’s Wife (1941) to help components.

His movies became more prestigious: Kipps (1941), Cottage to Let (1941), Ships with Wings (1941), In Which We Serve (1942), Secret Mission (1942), and Undercover (1943). He has been playing on stage for a year at Quiet Weekend. In 1943 he conducted in Gibraltar for the soldiers

Wilding married four times: Kay Young (married in 1937, divorced in 1951), actress Elizabeth Taylor married in 1952, divorced in 1957, Susan Nell married in 1958, divorced in 1962 and actress Margaret Leighton married in 1964 until she died in 1976.
He had two children, Michael Howard Wilding (born 1953) and Christopher Edward Wilding (born 1955), together with Taylor, who was his senior for 20 years. He had a short-lived romance in 1957 with actress Marie McDonald,  who was nicknamed The Body. In the 1960s he was forced to cut back on his film appearances because of illness related to his lifelong epilepsy.

Christopher Edward Wilding was born on February 27, 1955, in Los Angeles, California, USA. He is known for his work on Tombstone 1993, Overboard 1987 and The Shadow 1994. He is married to Margaret Carlton. They have one child. He was previously married to Aileen Getty.

Michael Wilding Death

Wilding died in Chichester, West Sussex, on 8 July 1979 at the age of 67. He died as a result of head injuries suffered from a fall down a flight of stairs during an epileptic seizure. His body was cremated and the ashes were scattered.
