Ray Lane Biography
Ray Lane is an American sportscaster located in Detroit, Michigan. Lane played baseball and basketball in the late 1940s, for the Stags of Mackenzie High School. He joined Michigan State University in 1949, where played baseball for the Spartans while earning a bachelor’s degree in communications. Lane has been a sports fixture in Michigan for the past four decades doing play-by-play for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, the University of Michigan football, Michigan State University football, and University of Detroit basketball. Away from Michigan, Lane’s other work included a stint doing play-by-play with the Cincinnati Reds from 1979 to 1984.

Ray started out his radio and TV career as an announcer in Cadillac, Michigan. He later moved to station KWWL in Waterloo, Iowa, working as a staff announcer after six months in Cadillac. Lane had his first experience as a play-by-play baseball broadcaster in KWWL filling in on broadcasts of the Waterloo White Hawks. After one whole year in Waterloo, lane found work in WNEM-TV in Saginaw, Michigan where he worked for three years before he got a chance to work in Detroit his home town. He was hired at WJBK-TV, Channel 2, in Detroit and after a few months, Lane was providing color commentary on Detroit Lions broadcasts. Detroit Tigers began looking for a new broadcaster after the 1964 season, creating another chance for Lane. Ray was hired by Tigers owner John Fetzer who asked him to team up with George Kell for two years.
Lane teamed with fellow sportscaster Ernie Harwell from 1967 through 1972 on Detroit Tigers radio broadcasts. Ray also worked on the team’s television broadcasts from the year 1999–2003. He has also broadcast at various times for the Detroit Lions, University of Michigan, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and Michigan State football and University of Detroit basketball. Lane was also sports director at WJBK television after succeeding Van Patrick and later at WKBD. Away from Michigan, Lane’s other works include a stint with the Cincinnati Reds. This presented him with the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting in 2003 and the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award the following year in 2014. Lane has also been involved with the Michigan PGA Hall of Fame. More recently, Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm declared October 3, 2009, as Ray Lane Day throughout the state. Ray Lane has been a member of the Corporate Leadership Board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Detroit since 1972. He has also been an active fundraiser for the United Foundation and the Sanctuary in Royal Oak, MI.
