Rebekka Johnson is an American actress, comedian, and writer. Rebekka is recognized for her portrayal of Dawn Rivecca on Netflix’s wrestling comedy GLOW. The famous actress was featured on MTV’s prank show Boiling Points. Johnson has also been performing with her musical comedy group. The group is called The Apple Sisters consisting of Kimmy Gatewood and Sarah Lowe since 2007.

On an interview with silive.com the actress was asked about how she landed her role on Glow she had this to say “Kimmy and I had been working together on a show called the ‘Milk Factory,’ when we heard from a casting director who saw us when we were still in New York — but kept in touch with us through the years.
They wanted a comedy duo. We auditioned for ‘GLOW’ together and there was a lot of improv in our audition. We were pushing the limits of ‘Gorgeous,’ with the biggest hair and the ugliest ’80s clothes. Kimmy did a leap move; then I did a jump-split. Yeah, that’s where my Staten Island Ballet training came in handy. I think that jump sealed the deal.”
The Apple Sisters
Johnson is co-creator of The Apple Sisters which is a World War II musical comedy trio. The group consists of Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, and Sarah Lowe. It started in 2007 in New York City. They received wide acclaim at the 2008 Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. This leads them to move to Los Angeles where they continually perform.

21 things to know about Netflix’s ‘GLOW’ scene stealer from Staten Island
LADIES & GENTLEMEN! IN STATEN ISLAND’S CORNER …
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On the rare occasion I get a shot in the ring with an up-and-comer “from” Staten Island, those hyped-up hometown roots typically pan out to be pretty damn weak.
Wrestling up a meaty handful of authentic connections is a big stretch.
BOOM! That’s not the case with Westerleigh native Rebekka Johnson, a reluctantly body-slamming, unabashedly scene-stealing supporting player on the critically acclaimed new Netflix series, “GLOW.”
Full disclosure: I was pinned to the mat for all 10 episodes. Binged it.
The ensemble comedy-drama follows a disparate/desperate crew of ’80s ladies who reinvent themselves as the disarmingly empowered “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” — under the totally retro-tutelage of sexist pig director Sam Sylvia (comic-podcaster-actor Marc Maron in a riveting performance). Created by the Emmy-winning team behind “Orange Is the New Black,” the series was inspired (loosely) by the real-life cult series of the same name that burned broadly, yet briefly, back in the Reagan Era.
Portraying one-half of the dithering tag-team duo “The Beatdown Biddies,” the raven-haired actress also plays a pivotal role in an outrageous — but supremely effective — finale plot twist that I, frustratingly, better not spoil here.
Rebekka recently took some time to chat with me about “GLOW.” Read on for a few facts you might not know about this “kayfabe” (look it up if ya don’t know) femme fatale:
BEFORE THE SPANDEX BRAWLING: REBEKKA WAS A TECH GIRL
“Yeah, I was a nerd” (laughs). I went to PS 30, IS 51 and Staten Island Tech for high school. I was a performer, which is funny: At the time, there was no budget at Tech for costumes or shows. Ingrid Michaelson and I were best friends in high school; we’re still good friends. Her and I would buy things and get my mom to make the costumes — both my parents worked as teachers at Tech. They’re retired now but my dad still teaches at College of Staten Island.
SHE MIGHT HAVE SERVED YOU IN LIVINGSTON
While waiting to see if Netflix picks up “GLOW” for a second season (they better, dammit), Rebekka quips: “I hope all this works out so I don’t have to go back to waiting tables. That’s what I used to do: I was a waitress at RH Tugs.”

In fact, she’s a veteran with street cred: “I’ve been doing improv for 20 years. FLASHBACK TO 2005: “It’s completely made up, you’re watching the process,” said Westerleigh native Rebekka Johnson, who co-stars in “Boiling Points.” The MTV show requires her to agitate strangers, who earn $100 if they don’t lose their cool.

“It’s a risk, maybe it will be good, maybe it will be bad, but most of the time it’s funny,” she said. “I could be anyone, anywhere – an astronaut, a big fat man.”

How a young wife and mom became a Beatdown Biddie:

WHICH BEGS THE QUESTION: WERE YOU INJURED DURING ANY OF THOSE WRESTLING STUNTS?
“No. The only time I was injured was Episode 9 when I was roller skating. The moment when I fell was not scripted. I’m just not good at roller skating. My tailbone is pretty much better. Hopefully it will be all better by when — if — we get a second season.”
SHE CAN HANG ON THE ‘JERSEY SHORE’
No, she’s not in the much-hyped “Jersey Shore” reunion. Rebbeka was recruited for an episode of Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi’s YouTube channel for Awestruck TV.
When the recent star of “Celebrity Apprentice” with Arnold Schwarzenegger was taking meetings recently in L.A., she did double-duty for her online series by filming an episode at Nerdist Improv School.
“When it came up they wanted to take improv classes, it just seemed to make sense at Nerdist,” said Rebekka, who teaches at the school. “I’ve still got a lot of Staten Island in me. I tried to get rid of it in acting school but it will come out if I’m drunk. I can use it for work — or for emphasis (laughs).
And, yes, Nicole (the “Moms with Attitude” star has moved beyond Snooki now, folks) gave us a quote: “Rebekka was such a cool and down to earth East Coast chick! She gave amazing insight on improv class and made me feel totally comfortable with letting loose in each exercise. Totally a fan.”
Random trivia note: Rebekka also starred as Angela/Deena in “Jersey Shoresical: A Frickin’ Rock Opera,” a 2011 musical parody that scored good notices in the New York Fringe Festival. Hence the crazy-a** photo above.

SPOILER ALERT: YES, SHE HAS A KKK WRESTLING SCENE
OK, we are trying not give away any spoilers here, but Rebekka and her partner in comedy, Kimmy, are put into a really difficult “heel”situation (for the un-wrestling-initiated, again, Google it), that takes on serious racial overtones.
Suffice to say, in an attempt to incite the worst wrestling villains ever — and, in turn, save a struggling upstart female wrestling franchise with tabloid drama — some subversive white-supremacist villain imagery is invoked.
OK, that’s all we’re saying. We spoke with Rebekka about this but our convo might give a crucial plot point away. So, you just gotta watch on Netflix.
We think Rebekka’s “Glow” co-star teases it best: “I felt so bad for Kimmy and Rebekka. They were very nervous about wearing [those] hoods and I’m saying ‘Hey, this is the real deal,”‘ co-star Kia Stevens told TV Guide.”This is visceral. This is what wrestling really is. People are given gimmicks that they actually struggle with and are uncomfortable with and if you wanna make it in wrestling, sometimes you have to eat crow and fly with it.”
SHE’S ONE OF THE APPLE SISTERS
Rebekka is one-third of this wacky, 1940s-inspired musical comedy trio: The Apple Sisters are Candy (Rebekka), Cora (“GLOW” co-star Kimmy Gatewood) and Seedy Apple (Sarah Lowe).
From a 2008 Time Out New York review: “By the end of an Apple Sisters show, [they] are heaving, sweating and covered in a patina of pudding and corn. The packed house is going nuts, clearly appreciating how rare it is to watch original dance numbers, hear three-part harmonies and witness grown women spit kernals on one another in an upstart indie comedy show.”
Being outrageous worked: The threesome was accepted into the prestigious Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, where agents and managers came a courting.
“They said, ‘Hey, you should move to L.A.,’” she recalls. “So, since 2009 I’ve lived out there but I still do shows with the Apple Sisters. We have a show coming up in Vegas.”
