May 3: A white male with “red hair and reddish blonde facial hair” is described as a suspect in the beating of a man in the 3400 blocks of Overland Avenue. The man tells police he’d only attempted to engage the suspect in conversation.
May 4: A man near Venice Beach is stabbed in the back by a “white suspect with red hair.” The victim says the man attacked him after they made eye contact. A few hours later, another man is found lying in a pool of blood on a sidewalk near Rose Avenue. The victim, according to police, sustained “significant and serious” stab wounds to his face, neck and upper body. Nearby video surveillance captured a white suspect leaving the scene.
May 5: A white male with “red hair and distinct tattoos” attacks a male employee in a coffee shop on Pacific Avenue. The suspect fled after threatening to stab the employee with a knife.
May 8: A Santa Monica 7-Eleven store is robbed at knifepoint. O’Neal, who was allegedly found near the scene, is arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Redmond O’Neal Trial
Ryan O’Neal is still waiting for his fate, which is to be determined at a Los Angeles [USA] Mental Health Court. O’Neal is facing attempted murder charges and other felonies he allegedly committed on May 2018. That left two men seriously injured.
On Wednesday, May 15,2019 Commissioner Laura Streimer told O’Neal’s defense attorney, Nina Daly, and prosecutor Matthew Byrne, to return to court the following month; for a pretrial hearing. Two reports submitted by psychologists previously deemed O’Neal incompetent to stand trial. His desperate family implored the judge to consider O’Neal’s long-documented mental illness.
However, after Dr. Anna Kafka met with O’Neal in court for about 10 to 15 minutes on Dec. 4, 2018, the psychologist determined O’Neal understood the severity of his charges. And could assist his attorney in his defense. Daly has asked the court for a third psychologist to evaluate O’Neal.
But that meeting has yet to take place. The defense attorney told the court commissioner, “It seems that they want to get a doctor, who will say what they want to hear.O’Neal is being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 10. If convicted, he could face decades behind bars.
Redmond O’Neal Drug Addiction
O’Neal has struggled with substance abuse issues since he was a teenager. leading to numerous drug and weapons-related charges as well as much time spent in rehab. In his report, Shagal said O’Neal hears voices, “indicating that his cell is bugged and at times, rather oddly telling his father that deputies had agreed to release him in exchange for cash payments. These bizarre perspectives have varied. And are stirringly suggestive of a certain irrationality. Indicative of authentic untreated set of mental health problems.”
Shagal did not interview O’Neal face-to-face but reviewed hundreds of pages of medical and mental health records. As well as jail and prison records and determined Red was not mentally competent to stand trial. Shagal also interviewed Ryan O’Neal and reviewed various letters written by half-siblings, on behalf of the troubled drifter.
The doctor, however, wrote in his October 2018 report that he believed O’Neal could be restored to a mentally competent state. If he is treated with psychotropic medication. Another psychologist, Anna Kafka, also reviewed his extensive files and noted that a discharge report from a state psychiatric facility showed he was “fixed on a belief that L.A. County Sheriff’s was persecuting him and sometimes poisoning his food.”
