Rehema was born in 1954 somewhere in North Carolina, in the southeastern part of the United States. However, she was raised in Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. As of 2018, she is 64–65 She attended the Simmons College located in Boston. After graduating, she attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York.

Early in her life, she got married to an unnamed man. She got divorced some years after the marriage. By the time of the divorce, the couple had one son. She currently lives in New York City with her son.

Before joining NBC in 1994, she worked in some other roles in other stations. Her career began in KDKA Radio and TV based in Pittsburgh, Pensylvania. After leaving this role, she became an anchor/reporter for WHDH-TV in Boston. In this role, she anchored weekend newscasts and report stories on other weekdays. She worked there until 1994 when she became a general assignment reporter for NBC.
Over the years, Rehema Ellis has covered several major topics including the attacks on the world trade center. She even was the first person to identify the attack on the air as “Nine-Eleven”. In addition, she reported on Hurricane Katrina, the death of Michael Jackson, as well as the Haiti earthquake. Among all her other coverages, the most notable ones are; The coverage of the plane crash in the Hudson River called “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2008 and the Presidential Election of Barack Obama.
