Sanika Bhargaw Hospital Text Scam

NBC15 first brought you this story on Monday when Southwest Health alerted their patients to the scam. On Tuesday, NBC15 heard the scam had found its way to hospitals in Reedsburg and Monroe as well.

Theresa Robertson of Monroe received a scam text. She said it took a few seconds for her to realize the message, which claimed to be from Monroe Clinic, was fake.

“It’s another one of those kinds of scary things that all of the different healthcare organizations around our area were being targeted, so that means, more people than just in Monroe,” Robertson said. The hospital said they never contact people by text message.

“We would only contact emergency contacts and we would do that with a personal phone call in an emergency situation,” said Patricia Lawson, Monroe Clinic’s Director of Community Relations.

After six years leading the Madison Metropolitan School District, NBC15 has learned Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham is leaving.

NBC15 has heard from several sources with connections to the district. An official announcement is expected Thursday morning.

Cheatham met with school principals on Tuesday, and the matter was discussed Monday night at a closed school board meeting. NBC15 has confirmed the closed session last night through the calendar on the MMSD website.

NBC15 is working to confirm the information that Cheatham has another opportunity and what that new opportunity is.

Cheatham took over as superintendent of Madison Metropolitan School District in April 2013. Before that, Cheatham was the chief of instruction for Chicago Public Schools and Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for San Diego City Schools.

Cheatham followed Dan Nerad, who served as superintendent for four years. Cheatham’s entrance to the position was met with optimism, with plans to close the achievement gap in students and prioritize quality instructors.

Sanika Bhargaw OWI crash

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office made three different OWI arrests on Saturday, May 4, including one in a crash that left a 33-year-old Janesville man dead.

On Monday, a friend and co-worker spoke to NBC15 about the David Savona, a man he calls a father figure and role model.

“He had such a father figure for everyone. Even if you were a 50-year-old man, he treated you like you were his son,” said Jesse Arellano, who worked with the victim at Best Buy. Arellano met Savona about a year ago, and the two quickly became good friends.

“It’s the vibe he gave off to you if you were to be around him that he’s such a chill guy that you would love him,” Arellano said. Arellano said he was devastated when he found out about his friend’s passing.

On Saturday night, Savona was a passenger in a car that drove into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with another vehicle. Officials pronounced Savona dead at the scene.

Rock County Sheriff’s Office deputies later arrested the driver, Thomas Bluhm, after he showed signs of impairment. The other driver was hospitalized with minor injuries and later released. Bluhm is set to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

Sanika Bhargaw Dane County Board

The Dane County Board of supervisors is set to consider four proposals to renovate and consolidate county jails, but not all supervisors support the plan.

Supervisor Heidi Wegleitner is one of those board members. Wegleitner held a community meeting Monday evening, hoping to hear from people who support different options.

The four proposals before the board include combinations of renovating existing jails and adding new buildings. Wegleitner said she feels the proposals are too expensive and do not focus enough on keeping people out of jail.

“I think we should be placing an emphasis on treating people in the community and making sure they don’t end up in jail, to begin with,” she said.

However, Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said the county is already working to do that. “We are already doing those programs we are already diverting people from jail on the front end,” Mahoney said.

The cheapest proposal on the table, at $148 million, is almost twice as expensive as the $76 million the county had set aside for their previous plan for the jails. The plan was to build additional floors on the Public Safety Building, but that idea became impossible because of the structural issues it would cause.
