Shams Charania Of The Athletic
College football reporter Brett McMurphy told Deadspin’s Nick Martin earlier this month that Charania would “do a video for Stadium and write for The Athletic.” That came after Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported Charania’s contract with Yahoo Sports was set to expire.
Charania, who graduated from college just a year ago, has quickly become one of the top insiders in the NBA. His “Shams Wow” breaking news reports have created a thrilling rivalry between him and his mentor, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Shams Charania Adrian Wojnarowski
Every free agency period or trade deadline, NBA fans anxiously wait for news from two league insiders: Adrian Wojnarowski or Shams Charania. Wojnarowski and his signature “Woj bombs” rule the Internet to some. Others prefer Charania’s more low-key but swift approach to report league transactions.

Shams attended the Loyola University Chicago which is a private Catholic research university in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1870 by the Jesuits, today Loyola is one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States. Comprising eleven colleges and schools, Loyola offers over 80 undergraduate and 140 graduate/professional programs and enrolls approximately 16,000 students.
Loyola has six campuses across the Chicago metropolitan area, as well as a campus in Rome and guest programs in Beijing and Ho Chi Minh City. The flagship Lake Shore Campus is on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Rogers Park and Edgewater neighborhoods of Chicago, eight miles north of the Loop.
Shams Charania Contract
Charania and Yahoo Sports were unable to reach an agreement for a contract extension, meaning Charania will be the top remaining free agent of the NBA summer.
Charania, 24, is perhaps the most promising young name in sports journalism. He is just a year removed from graduating college and spent his final two years working full time as a student and reporter for Yahoo.
Thirteen months ago, Yahoo Sports had two of the most prominent news breakers in Charania and Adrian Wojnarowski. Yahoo allowed ESPN to poach Wojnarowski as part of a widespread retooling of the Worldwide Leader’s NBA reporting. Shams, a mentee of Woj, was left to lead the way at Yahoo.
Marchand reported Charania is not expected to join Wojnarowski at ESPN. Instead, he’s expected to court offers from NBC Sports Regional Networks and The Athletic, among others.
