Steve Francis NBA

Born and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, the Takoma Park Boys & Girls Club provided Francis with the opportunity to play athletics at an early age. While growing up, Randall Cunningham was his idol and dreamed of playing in the NFL. Academically, Francis was ineligible to play basketball his freshman year in high school.

In his sophomore year, he made it to the varsity squad as he grew from 5’3” to 5’9”, averaging 10 minutes per game. An ankle injury during a pre-season pick-up game prevented him from playing his junior season, and tragically when his mother passed away during his senior year, he dropped out of school. She passed on in 1995 as a result of cancer and his grandmother took over the parenting responsibility.

He unfortunately stopped playing basketball after his mother’s death but through support and guidance from friends and family, Steve was able to get back on the right track. He earned his GED and enrolled at San Jacinto Junior College in Texas. The following year he attended Allegany Community College in Maryland and earned his Associates Arts Degree.

Francis led the basketball teams at both of these schools to the NJCAA final. This success landed him at the University of Maryland. In just one short season, Steve lead the University of Maryland Terrapins to be ranked among the top five Men’s Basketball teams nationally. After his junior season, Steve entered his name into the 1999 NBA Draft and was selected as the second pick overall to the Vancouver Grizzlies; but was ultimately traded to the Houston Rockets, where he played from 1999 until 2004.

Steve’s collegiate success carried over into his first year in the NBA with him winning Rookie of the Year and finishing as the runner up in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Steve went on to make three NBA All-Star appearances and be known as one of the most prolific dunkers and athletes in league history.

In the later part of his career, he was traded to both the Orlando Magic and Knicks and ultimately landed back in Houston where he retired from the NBA after the 2008 season. After undergoing a lengthy rehabilitation process on his knee and quadriceps following surgery, Steve retired from the NBA but continues to commit himself to his Foundation and many business ventures.

The mission of the Steve Francis Foundation is to create education and recreational opportunities for at-risk youth. Through the foundation’s scholarship program, they have successfully raised over 600K and awarded sixty-three students with scholarships to date. The Foundation plans to expand its offerings to cities around the country.
