Steve Lopez Biography

Steve Lopez is an American journalist. He was born as Steven M. Lopez. Lopez has been a columnist for The Angeles Times since 2001. His book The Soloist inspired the 2009 film of the same name. Lopez joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in May 2001 after four years at Time Inc. He wrote for Time, Sports Illustrated, Life and Entertainment Weekly.

He wrote the novels Third and IndianaThe Sunday Macaroni Club, and  In the Clear. He has also compiled a collection of his works from The Philadelphia Inquirer titled Land of Giants. Also a collection of Los Angeles Times columns called Dreams & Schemes. Nathaniel Anthony Ayers became the subject of a national best-selling book by Lopez that inspired the film The Soloist.

Ayers and Lopez’s relationship was also nationally highlighted in the March 22, 2009, episode of 60 Minutes. Los Angeles city attorney Carmen Trutanich invited Lopez to participate in a driving test while under the influence of marijuana. The purpose of this study was to gauge the potential ramifications of California Proposition 19.
