Topper Shutt Biography
Topper Shutt born Charles Shutt is an American Chief Meteorologist for WUSA 9 in Washington, D.C and appears weekdays on the station’s 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm & 11 pm newscasts, as well as throughout the day and night during all major weather events affecting the region.
Since 1988 he has provided weather forecasts for WHUR 96.3 FM, and also does weather for All-News 99.1 WNEW. In 2008, readers of washingtonpost.com’s “Capital Weather Gang” voted Topper their favorite local weathercaster. He has also established an organization named Automated Weather Source. He has also played a movie and the name of the movie is Evan Almighty.

He graduated high school from Landon School in Bethesda, and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
He studied Meteorology at the University of Tennessee and the University of North Carolina/Asheville. Topper earned the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval for both television and radio in 1988.
Topper Shutt Career
In 1981, Shutt began his television weather career with CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, working as a weather producer and replacing weather anchor.
He moved on to a weekday weather anchor position at WTVK-TV (now WVLT-TV) in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1984. He spent a year as a weekend weather anchor at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina, from 1987 to 1988.
He joined WFMY sister station WUSA in 1988, also beginning to supply WHUR-FM with forecasts at that time. He co-founded Automated Weather Source in 1992, a network of weather stations that reported real-time observations to be used on broadcast television.
He served as an occasional stand-in for CBS This Morning weather anchors Mark McEwen and Craig Allen between 1994 and 2000. Shutt also served on the review panel of the National Science Foundation for National Science Education Standards
