She is the daughter of Gladyce Lorraine and Dr. Erle Murray Blunden. She attended California State University, Sacramento where she earned a degree in Liberal Arts. She then attended Universidad de Las Americas in Mexico City to study Spanish and anthropology.

She was a visiting lecturer teaching broadcast journalism at Montclair State College in New Jersey. She got her first job as an anchor at KCRA TV where she hosted KCRA TV specials and also produced the noon news broadcast. She is married to Michael A. Krauss in 1978 but they divorced in 1992. She had 3 daughters from this marriage.
