Kristi Nelson Biography

Kristi Nelson is an American journalist working at NBC 5 First at Four and 5 Talk Street Anchor and Reporter. Her interest in journalism started when she was just 9 years old.

Back in August 2011, she donated a kidney to her mother and she documented it in a multiple-part series, Kristi’s Gift. The series aired on NBC 5, the week of surgery. She won an Emmy from this series.

Kristi got interested in journalism when she was a young girl, 9 years old. She started banging out articles based on topics she used to see on TV. This was the beginning of her love for news and storytelling. She is now an award-winning journalist working as the anchor of NBC 5 First at Four and 5 Talk Street.

She has spent nearly 20 years in NBC 5 and she has hosted many different shows including, Lone Star Politics, NBC 5 Spotlight and been at the forefront of some of the region’s most memorable breaking news stories. Kristi, however, started her journalism career as a newspaper reporter.

Kristi spent several summers as an intern at the Dallas Morning News before she went to work at The Philadelphia Inquirer, and later, at the Cincinnati Enquirer. Kristi joined the NBS’s Communication Department where she used to work as a writer within the Publishing Ventures division.

She wrote many articles for commemorative magazines and NBA-branded publications. Her work included writing for Inside Stuff and Hoop magazines and was part of the media relations team mobilized for major events, including NBA Finals, NBA All-Star Weekend and NBA Draft.

Kristi has recently been covering issues to do with justice, race, communities, and health. Kristi has won 3 Lone Star Emmys and also has a Gracie Award from The Alliance for Women in Media.

She also has multiple awards from the National Association of Black Journalists. Kristi has received honors from several organizations for her work as a journalist as well as her contributions to the North Texas community in the USA.
