Laura Schlessinger Biography

Laura Schlessinger is an American talk-radio host. She is a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame. Schlessinger was born in the new york city borough of Brooklyn. She was raised in Brooklyn and later on Long Island. Laura describes her childhood environment as unloving and unpleasant, and her family as dysfunctional. Schlessinger has assigned some of the difficulty to extended family rejection of her parents mixed faith Jewish-Catholic marriage. Laura’s father was petty, insensitive, mean, thoughtless, demeaning, and downright unloving. Laura has credited her father for giving her the drive to succeed.

Schlessinger attended Westbury High School and Jericho Highschool were she showed an interest in science. Laura received a bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University. She moved to Columbia for graduate studies where she earned a master’s and Ph.D. in Psychology in 1974. Her doctoral thesis was on insulin’s effects on laboratory rats. Laura obtained training and certification in marriage and family counseling from the University of Southern California after she began dispensing personal advice on the radio. She opened up a part-time practice as a marriage and family therapist.

Laura Schlessinger made her first appearance on radio in 1975 when she was called into a KABC show hosted by Bill Ballance. Laura’s stint on Ballance’s shows led her to her own shows on a series of small radio stations. In 1979 she was on the air Sunday evenings from 9:00 to midnight on KWIZ in Santa Ana, California. Dr.Laura Schlessinger offers no-nonsense advice inspired by a strong sense of ethics, accountability, and personal responsibility. Laura has done it successfully for more than 30 years, reaching approximately 8.25 million listeners weekly. She has an internationally syndicated radio program that is heard on XM Satelite Radio, CelleCast and is streamed on the Internet and Podcast via StreamLink.

She has one sister; Cindy Schlessinger. Their parents are Monroe Schlessinger and Yolanda Schlessinger. Laura was not close to her sister for years and many thought she was the only child. She had not spoken to her mother for 18 to 20 years before her death in 2002 from Heart disease. Shockingly her mother’s remains were found in her condo in Beverly Hills two months after she died. She lay unclaimed for some time in the Los Angeles morgue before Laura had her remains picked up for burial. She said that she had not mourned the deaths of both of her parents because she had no emotional bond to them.

Schlessinger married Michael F .Rudolph, a dentist, in 1972 while attending Columbia University. The couple had a Unitarian ceremony but later got separated and Laura moved to Encino, California in 1975. The couple finalized their divorce in 1977. Laura later married Lewis Bishop in 1985 who died on November 2, 2015, after being ill for 1 1/2 years.

When it started,310,000 people tried to access it simultaneously and crashed it. Issues like feminism are often discussed on her website. Laura was a self-proclaimed feminist in the 1970s but is now opposed to feminism.

Laura Schlessinger Awards

In 2000, Laura Schlessinger became the first non-christian to receive the chairman’s award from the National Broadcasters but her relationship with God fluctuated. Laura Schlessinger was the first woman to win the Marconi Award for Network/Syndicated Personality of the Year(1997). In 1998 she received the American Women in Radio & Television’s Genii Award. Laura Schlessinger was on the Forbes top 100 list of celebrities in 2000 with estimated earnings of $13million. Later in September 2002, the industry magazine Talkers named Schlessinger as the 7th greatest radio talk-show host of all time.

In the years 2005 and 2008, she received a  National Heritage award from the National Council of Youn Israel in March 2001. Laura Schlessinger has lectured on the national conservative circuit and received the National Religious Broadcasters Chairman’s Award. Schlessinger also holds multiple trophies for sailboat racing and is a Black Belt in martial arts. She has designed and handcrafted elegant jewelry for charitable causes. Mostly for Operation Family Fund which provides financial assistance to families of military personnel severely injured or killed in Iraq  and Afghanistan. Laura has raised over $1million for Operation Family Fund from the sale of her jewelry on her website.
