The Newy Scruggs Sports Broadcasting Scholarship was established in 2003 for students who desire careers in the sports media.

Scruggs is known as the Newdawg. The gloss of the name came from his Omega Psi Phi Fraternity brothers at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

He was named the 1992 National Leadership Award winner Omega. Thankful for the many opportunities and awards he received, Scruggs created the Dr. Sylvester Wooten Scholarship for fellow Chi Mu chapter members in 2007.
