Pat Metheny Bio

Patrick Bruce Metheny is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He is the leader of the Pat Metheny Group. Metheny is also involved in duets, solo works, and other side projects. His style includes elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion.

Pat Metheny has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards and is the only person to win Grammys in 10 categories. He is the brother of jazz flugelhornist Mike Metheny.

Pat Metheny Age

Pat Metheny was born on 12th August 1954, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. His father Dave played the trumpet, his mother Lois sang, and his maternal grandfather Delmar was a professional trumpeter. Metheny’s first instrument was trumpet, which he was taught by his brother, Mike. His brother, father, and grandfather played trios together at home.

His parents were supporters of Glenn Miller and swing music. They took Metheny along with them to concerts to hear Clark Terry and Doc Severinsen, despite having little respect for guitar. Metheny’s interest in guitar increased around 1964 when he saw the Beatles perform on TV. On his 12th birthday, Pat’s parents allowed him to buy a guitar, a Gibson ES-140 3/4.

Metheny’s life changed after hearing the album Four & More by Miles Davis. Soon after, he was captivated by Wes Montgomery’s album Smokin’ at the Half Note, released in 1965. He mentions the Beatles, Miles Davis, and Wes Montgomery as having the biggest impact on his music.

At the age of 15, Pat won a scholarship from Down Beat magazine to a one-week jazz camp where he was mentored by guitarist Attila Zoller. He later invited Metheny to New York City to see guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter.

While playing at a club in Kansas City, Metheny was approached by Bill Lee, a dean at the University of Miami, and offered him a scholarship. After less than a week at college, Metheny realized that playing guitar all day during his teens had left him unprepared for classes. He admitted this to Lee, who offered him a job to teach instead, as the school had recently introduced electric guitar as a course of study.

Pat then moved to Boston to teach at the Berklee College of Music with jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton and established a reputation as a prodigy. As of 2019, Pat Metheny is 65 years old.

Pat Metheny Side Eye

Pat Metheny planned to launch a new playing environment called Side-Eye for the upcoming season. Pat explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing setting to feature a rotating cast of new and upcoming musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way.”

H continued, “From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians giving me a platform to develop my thing through the prism of their experience and the particular demands of what their music implied. I have been feeling like I wanted to have a specific platform to focus on some of the many younger musicians I have enjoyed recently who I have felt some kind of a kinship with.”

“I hear regularly from new players on the scene who have professed an influence from my records and tunes and I often invite them up to my house to play. Very often, it is really natural and organic to the music to play with them, they have literally grown up with it.

I find myself inspired by how they deal with the musical challenges that come with the territory of some of those older tunes, and at the same time, I find myself intrigued with the possibilities of what might be possible in writing new music just for them. This band setting is what that will be all about.”

The edition of Side-Eye features James Francies, keyboards, pianist and drummer Marcus Gilmore.

Pat Metheny Last Train Home

Last Train Home was the first greatest hits album by American jazz fusion band Pat Metheny Group. It was released in Japan on March 4, 2015, by Nonesuch Records. As such, the album’s slipcover artwork features stills from the ending credits animation for Stardust Crusaders, arranged in homage to the cover of Last Train Home’s parent album, Still Life (Talking). A separate inner cover featured a photograph of abandoned train cars in the desert.

Last Train Home contains selections from the band’s albums released by Geffen Records and Warner Bros. Records, spanning from 1987 to 2002, excluding the 1996 album Quartet. Though a few of the Group’s songs have been collected on Selected Recordings: rarum IX. This is a compilation of Metheny’s more popular tunes, this is the first compilation album dedicated entirely to Pat Metheny Group itself.
